The Challenge

The client came to us to mark a milestone that doesn't happen twice: 44 years of service, capped by a career-long partnership between Manny Parreira and the Toronto Police Financial Crimes and Divisional Fraud Offices. They arrived with a clear vision already in hand — an AI-generated mock-up showing exactly the look and feel they wanted.

That gave us a strong creative starting point. It also gave us a manufacturing problem, because a design that looks convincing on a screen and a design that survives laser engraving inside a solid block of optical crystal are two very different things. We had detected Garbled / misspelled text from AI image, also notify them that colored gradient cannot being engraved in the crystal, also modify the over-dense details to prevent structural risk and lastly design a correct proportion and give it a base with LED illumination.

Design & Proofing

Once the concept was corrected and the 3D portrait model was built, we put together a full proof with exact layout, corrected text, true crystal proportions, and walked the client through it before anything touched the laser. That review caught the small things a screen mock-up hides: line spacing against the crest, how the portrait sat relative to the tribute copy, whether the base tone actually matched the warmth of the original vision. Only once the client signed off on that proof did production begin, so the finished piece was never a surprise on delivery.

Manufacturing

This piece brought together four techniques working in sequence. We started with subsurface 3D laser engraving, permanently suspending the portrait, crest, and skyline inside the optical crystal itself. From there, surface etching gave the maple leaf details and tribute text their crisp, tactile definition, while color fill locked in lasting, fade-resistant pigment. Finally, UV color printing brought the police badge to life on the surface — delivering the warmth and depth the client's original concept called for, without asking the crystal to do something it physically couldn't.

The Result

The finished plaque delivers on the spirit of the client's original concept — same warmth, same story, same sense of occasion — built in a form that will actually hold up: permanent, fracture-safe, and true to a genuine 3D internal engraving rather than a flat print pretending to be one.
